About the position

The Staff Machine Learning Engineer for Behaviors at Cruise is responsible for developing machine learning models that enable autonomous vehicles to navigate urban environments smoothly and safely. This role involves both research and development, focusing on optimizing on-road performance and guiding technology choices within the team. The engineer will collaborate with various teams to leverage data from sensors and ensure the vehicle follows planned paths accurately, contributing to the advancement of self-driving technology.

Responsibilities

  • Exploring, prototyping, validating, and iterating new algorithms from a research perspective.
  • Driving efforts to optimize, supervise, and refine on-road performance for models on the path to production.
  • Guiding current and future technology choices as a technical leader in the department.
  • Understanding the business and operational impact of different technology tradeoffs and balancing them based on company needs.
  • Enabling other engineers on the team to be more effective through easy-to-extend design and code.
  • Influencing others and building consensus over technical debates.

Requirements

  • BS, MS, or higher degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Extensive experience with machine learning frameworks such as Tensorflow, Caffe, and PyTorch.
  • Extensive experience with machine learning and classification.
  • Strong programming skills in Python or C++.
  • Excellent mathematical reasoning skills, especially with probability.
  • Passionate about self-driving car technology and its impact on the world.

Nice-to-haves

  • PhD in machine learning or computer science.
  • Experience with ROS, OpenCV, Gazebo, or PCL.
  • Experience with CUDA.
  • Track record in deploying prediction models into real-world environments.
  • Experience with autonomous driving technologies.
