About the position

Staff Nurse I is accountable for the delivery of patient care utilizing the Nursing Process and Relationship-Based Care model as the framework. The Staff Nurse I provides direct patient care and takes initiative to improve patient outcomes by integrating Shared Leadership, Evidence Based Practice, Relationship Based Care and standards of nursing excellence into clinical practice. Through therapeutic relationships with patients, families, self and colleagues, the Staff Nurse I functions as an interdisciplinary team member who provides quality patient care and fulfills unit and organizational goals. Will also adhere to the mission, vision and goals of the Specialty Care Building (SCB).

Responsibilities

  • Establishes an in-depth database by assessing the behavioral and physical status of a variety of pre-surgical patient populations, utilizing interviews, observation, and physical examination.
  • Evaluates patients' responses to care based on the effectiveness of nursing interventions in establishing outcomes and consults with the medical staff, care team lead, and nursing supervisor.
  • Recommends changes to the plan of care based on observed variances.
  • Integrates nursing interventions into the multidisciplinary plan of care, incorporating appropriate standards of care and practice.
  • Identifies learning needs of patients and families and teaches by adapting standard information to provide individualized and comprehensive learning.
  • Incorporates discharge/home care planning into the multidisciplinary plan of care.
  • Develops a therapeutic relationship by establishing trust and enabling the patient and family to verbalize the requirements for care comfortably.
  • Supports and enhances the patient's responsibility and self-determination in decision-making concerning health, treatment, and well-being.
  • Competent in all three areas of peri anesthesia- Preop, Phase 1, and Phase 2 recovery areas.
  • Observes patients for side effects of anesthesia.
  • Monitors and records patient vital signs.
  • Monitors patient's level of consciousness throughout sedation recovery.
  • Performs post-operative tasks, such as administering medication or changing dressings.
  • Checks and updates patient files, charts, and medical records.
  • Collaborates with surgeons, anesthesiologists, physicians, and other members of the patient's care team.
  • Provides comfort and answers questions when patients wake from sedation.
  • Educates patients and their families regarding post-surgery care at home.
  • Requires adherence to all policies and procedures, including but not limited to standards for safety, attendance, punctuality, and personal appearance.
  • Ability to administer a variety of treatments & medications, including all medicines on the crash cart.
  • Collaborates with the medical team on post-operative patient care and facilitating timely specialized interventions.
  • Treats pain, nausea, and other post-operative symptoms of anesthesia.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking by integrating theoretical knowledge and expertise to pose relevant clinical questions when evidence and practice differ.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of teaching interventions and the patient/family's level of understanding.
  • Assesses and instructs patient/family before surgery.
  • Assures intake of the patient is accurate through chart review, questioning using safe communication tactics outlined in learning modules.
  • Assures that operative/informed consents are accurate and signed per policy.
  • Initiates orders from physicians.
  • Obtains and records vital signs.
  • Monitors and accurately documents essential signs and ensures the patient meets discharge criteria before moving to next.
  • Monitors patients' condition and reports changes to the appropriate physicians.
  • Assures patient comfort and answers patient questions.
  • Other assigned duties that will assist with safety, quality, and efficiency.

Requirements

  • Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
  • Current AHA BLS/CPR and other required unit specific certifications.
  • Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships between patients, family, and health care providers.
  • Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) with on-the-job training.
  • Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills and work history required.
  • Required 3 years experience of PACU Phase I, Phase II, and Pediatric Patients.
  • Experience with precepting and orienting.
  • Pediatric Experience is required.
  • Required BLS/ACLS/PALS Certifications When Applying.

  • EPIC Experience Preferred.
  • Knowledgeable of ASPAN Guidelines.
  • Bilingual Preferred.
