About The Position

The Staff Pathologist plays a critical role in Exact Sciences’ precision oncology mission by providing expert histopathologic evaluation of breast and colon cancer specimens that support the Oncotype DX ® genomic testing portfolio. In this role, the Staff Pathologist reviews and annotates histologic slides from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tumor tissue to confirm tumor characteristics and guide downstream molecular analyses used to generate clinically actionable Recurrence Scores that inform treatment decisions. The Staff Pathologist operates within a CAP-accredited, CLIA-certified high-complexity clinical laboratory and collaborates closely with pathology, laboratory operations, bioinformatics, and clinical teams to ensure the highest standards of quality and scientific rigor. Beyond case review, the Staff Pathologist contributes to the continuous improvement of pathology workflows and laboratory processes while representing Exact Sciences within the broader pathology community through engagement in national meetings, professional societies, and committee service. This position supports a collaborative pathology team and requires on-site presence one day per week at the Redwood City, California laboratory. This is an on-site position with the expectation of 1 day per week in the laboratory.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine (M.D.).
  • Board-certified in Anatomical and Clinical Pathology.
  • Completion of a Surgical Pathology and/or Cytology Fellowship.
  • 3+ years of clinical practice experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform diagnostic surgical pathology skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide a strong patient-centric and customer service orientation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide the highest quality professional pathology services for Clinical Laboratory Operations; including microscopic examination and annotation of H&E stained slides and microscopic interpretation of IHC stained slides.
  • Develop, improve, and support clinical and business processes in the Clinical Pathology function.
  • Review submitted pathology reports and materials.
  • Discuss pathology findings with submitting pathologists in a timely manner.
  • Provide pathology input and consultation to Customer Service, Marketing, and Medical Affairs.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams such as Histology, Clinical Lab Science, Lab Operations, Customer Service/Accessioning and IT to ensure high quality and efficient operations.
  • Participate in the Pathology Quality Assurance and Improvement Program.
  • Participate in various events; including Operations, Case Review Team, Consensus Conference, weekly Pathologist and quarterly GHI Consultant Pathologist meetings.
  • Understand Exact Sciences’ Laboratory Management requirements, which are informed by Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and College of American Pathologists (CAP) regulations.
  • Attend, prepare, and submit pathology abstracts describing Exact Sciences’ clinical laboratory experience in appropriate meetings; including San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS), American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Breast, United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP), CAP, and Association for Molecular Pathology (AMP).
  • Present pathology related posters/platform talks at meetings.
  • Actively participate in national pathology organizations and seek service committee membership.
  • Assist in writing and submitting pathology manuscripts related to the commercial process.
  • Support Exact Sciences' Customer Service and Medical Affairs Teams with outreach calls and answering MD’s pathology related questions, single gene discordances, and queries about Recurrence Score values.
  • Develop professional relationships with key internal Exact Sciences functions including Information Technology, Sales and Marketing, Medical Affairs, Process Engineering, and Clinical Laboratory.
