About the position

The Staff, Process Development Engineer at VIAVI is responsible for providing engineering support in the manufacturing of optical thin film coatings. This role serves as a technical interface between production staff and engineering teams, focusing on improving process yields, product quality, and engineering efficiency. The engineer will collaborate with customers and product design teams to identify requirements and establish specifications for optical filters, ensuring that production meets customer expectations and delivery timelines.

Responsibilities

• Work closely with customers and Application Engineering during the quotation, preparation for manufacturing, and production phases of a product.
• Interface with production personnel to provide manufacturing guidance and problem solving.
• Provide technical ownership of vacuum coating platform, including overall tool performance in yield, cycle time, readiness for production, areas for improvement, and capability.
• Transfer new products from development to volume manufacturing.
• Identify opportunities for and drive continuous improvement activities in manufacturing.

Requirements

• Bachelor or Master's degree in Engineering, Physics or other related technical discipline.
• Three to five years of experience in a manufacturing setting.
• Understanding of design and evaluation of optical coatings preferred.
• Knowledgeable in Metrology techniques and equipment desired.
• Ability to work under pressure and deal with demanding customers.
• Knowledge of fundamental engineering concepts, statistical process control, and problem-solving techniques.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to interface with internal as well as external customers.
• Proficiency in Statistical Process Control.
