About the position

At Relativity Space, we are on a mission to revolutionize the aerospace industry and pave the way for humanity's future on Mars. As a Staff Propulsion Engineer in the Engine Systems & Test Team, you will play a crucial role in the development and testing of our innovative Terran R rocket. This position involves a variety of responsibilities that span across simulation and software tools, system-level architecture, requirements management, and integrated system hotfire testing. You will collaborate closely with component engineers, manufacturing teams, and test teams to ensure the successful delivery of engines that propel our rockets into orbit. Your role will require you to drive engine system architecture and CONOPS trades, manage engine interfaces, and negotiate requirements to optimize the vehicle's performance. You will also support engine system analysis, simulation, and testing, contributing to tool development and other critical tasks. This highly technical position demands not only coordination and facilitation among various technical teams but also the application of your deep technical expertise to solve complex problems. To thrive in this role, you should be a self-starter with a proven track record of leading collaborative projects to completion with minimal oversight. The position requires an average of 15% travel to our test and launch sites, and you may occasionally need to work weekends or adjusted schedules to meet critical milestones.

Responsibilities

  • Drive engine system architecture and CONOPS trades.
  • Manage engine interfaces and negotiate requirements to optimize vehicle performance.
  • Support engine system development overall.
  • Conduct engine system analysis and simulation.
  • Participate in engine testing and tool development.
  • Collaborate with component engineers and manufacturing teams to deliver engines.
  • Facilitate coordination among technical teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a science, engineering, technology, or mathematics field.
  • 8+ years of relevant experience in complex engineering system development and/or test environment.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals in fluid mechanics and thermodynamics.
  • Clear evidence of ownership and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective team collaboration experience from school or work.
  • Demonstrated drive to deliver on ambitious schedules.
  • Working knowledge of liquid-propellant rocket engines.

Nice-to-haves

  • Working knowledge of fluid components such as valves and instrumentation.
  • Working knowledge of engine subsystems such as combustion devices and turbomachinery.
