About the position

The Staff Sustaining R&D Engineer at Abbott will play a crucial role in supporting the Structural Interventions team, focusing on market-released cardiac occluder devices and related systems. This position involves a variety of responsibilities including failure analysis, design changes, and R&D support for supplier requests, all aimed at enhancing product functionality and manufacturability.

Responsibilities

  • Provides R&D support for market-released cardiac occluders, delivery systems, and accessories
  • Conducts feasibility studies to verify capability and functionality to support investigations and/or design changes
  • Develops solutions to improve product function and manufacturability
  • Directs support personnel and coordinates project activities
  • Writes and submits Engineering Change orders
  • Maintains detailed documentation throughout all phases of a project
  • Investigates and evaluates design changes, manufacturing changes, NCMRs, CAPAs and/or customer complaints
  • Reviews or coordinates vendor activities to support development
  • Researches various cost-effective, alternative approaches to current designs and processes
  • Involved in test method and fixture development
  • Supports development of risk management documentation (DFMEA, UFMEA, PFMEA)
  • Gains an understanding of the quality and regulatory requirements of Abbott, FDA and ISO regulations
  • Complies with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, Company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments
  • Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities, on occasion, as assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical or related Engineering degree
  • 8+ years medical device engineering experience

Nice-to-haves

  • Exposure to a variety of manufacturing processes used in medical devices, specifically deflectable sheaths and/or EP Catheters
  • Worked with an electronic document control system (Windchill, etc.)
  • Solidworks or other CAD experience
  • Previous academic GPA: 3.0 or higher
  • Experience working within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast-paced, changing environment
  • Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate to all levels of the organization
  • Proficient in collaborating with project stakeholders (client and internal), end-users, business partners, and technical team members
  • Multitasks, prioritizes and meets deadlines in timely manner
  • Strong organizational and follow-up skills, as well as attention to detail
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams in a geographically diverse, matrixed organization
