About the position

Ethicon, part of Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices Companies, is seeking a Staff Reliability Engineer - Electrical to join our Hardware Team in the RAD group located in Santa Clara, CA. This team is composed of a diverse group of highly motivated engineers who are dedicated to designing and developing groundbreaking robotic platforms. As a Staff Reliability Engineer, you will be the domain expert on the reliability of electrical and electronic assemblies, playing a crucial role in ensuring the success of our mission to innovate in the medical robotics field. In this position, you will work closely with the Electrical Engineering team to design, evaluate, and enhance the reliability of printed circuit board assemblies (PCBA) for complex medical robotics systems. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, independent, and eager to learn while thriving in a dynamic environment. You will be responsible for planning and coordinating design and testing activities to develop and deliver reliable systems, championing the implementation of Design for Reliability principles, and conducting failure analysis and root-cause analysis on electromechanical equipment in collaboration with multifunctional teams. Your role will also involve designing, documenting, and releasing PCBA reliability test protocols, authoring reports, and developing quality system documentation to improve company-wide reliability processes. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to mentor junior engineers, sharing your expertise and fostering their growth within the team.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and coordinate design and testing activities to develop and deliver a reliable system.
  • Champion implementation of Design for Reliability principles for electrical and electronic components of a complex medical robotics system.
  • Coordinate failure analysis and perform root-cause analysis on electromechanical equipment with multifunctional teams.
  • Design, document, and release PCBA reliability test protocols and author reports as per the reliability strategy.
  • Develop quality system documentation to improve company-wide reliability processes.
  • Mentor junior engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering field is required.
  • 8+ years of demonstrated industry experience in improving the reliability of electrical and electronic equipment in all phases of the product development lifecycle.
  • Ability to read schematics and have a basic understanding of printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) designs.
  • Proven record of applying Design for Reliability principles, such as de-rating techniques to improve the reliability of electrical and electronic assemblies.
  • Working knowledge of reliability test methods for electrical and electronic equipment (examples, 4-corner, HALT, HAST, etc.).
  • Ability to produce high-quality documentation that is clearly understandable.
  • Ability to work in ambiguity, prioritize, and lead work on multiple projects.

Nice-to-haves

  • Working knowledge of risk management techniques, such as DFMEA, for complex electromechanical systems in FDA regulated environment is desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience with reliability testing and failure investigation of complex electromechanical systems in the Medical Device industry is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of ReliaSoft reliability tools, Minitab statistical software, Telcordia prediction, PCA/PCBA stress simulations is an asset.
  • Understanding the reliability of repairable systems is a plus.
  • Experience with PLM such as Oracle Agile.
  • Experience working with contract manufacturers and external suppliers is helpful.
