About the position

The Staff Research Associate position at UC San Diego involves conducting research on the biological mechanisms of learning and memory in rodents. The role includes performing various laboratory techniques such as histochemical staining, image analysis, and electrophysiological recordings, while also managing routine lab duties and ensuring a safe working environment. This position is available as either a non-exempt Staff Research Associate 1 or an exempt Staff Research Associate 2, depending on the candidate's qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform research projects on biological mechanisms for learning and memory in rodents under the supervision of the Principal Investigator.
  • Conduct histochemical staining and image analysis, including cresyl violet and Timm staining.
  • Prepare brain tissue and perform microscopy and digital imaging of brain sections.
  • Independently perform routine laboratory duties such as assembling recording devices and surgical procedures.
  • Prepare and perform electrophysiological recordings and optogenetic manipulations.
  • Conduct behavioral testing of rodents and maintain accurate records of experiments.
  • Order lab supplies and prepare standard solutions for experiments.
  • Hire and train undergraduate student lab employees and maintain a clean work environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, and genetics.
  • Experience with basic laboratory equipment such as light microscopes and recording devices.
  • Proven ability to work with rodents as the primary experimental system.
  • Knowledge of humane methods of caring for lab animals in compliance with AAALAC standards.
  • Demonstrated successful interpersonal communication skills with diverse personalities.
  • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and keep accurate records.
  • Experience in building, assembling, and repairing recording devices for small mammals.
  • Strong competence in histochemical staining and image analysis.
  • Experience with surgical procedures in rodents.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with MAC or PC programs, filemaking, spreadsheet, and graphics software.
  • Knowledge of Safety Data Sheets and hazard communication.
  • Willingness to keep safety training current and consistent with research involvement.
