About the position

The Staff Research Associate (SRA 3) at the University of California, Davis, plays a crucial role in providing technical support for the identification of microbial pathogens related to emergency preparedness and bioterrorism. This position involves using advanced laboratory techniques and equipment to analyze pathogens and collaborate with local partners, contributing to the mission of educating future leaders in occupational and environmental health and addressing health hazards in communities.

Responsibilities

  • Isolation, identification, and characterization of pathogens
  • Molecular characterization of pathogens
  • Quality assurance
  • Providing technical information to laboratory staff and local partners when requested

Requirements

  • Master's degree or PhD in Microbiology, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Epidemiology, Food Microbiology, or Infectious Diseases, or equivalent combination of a Bachelor's Degree with 3-5 years of clinical laboratory experience
  • Skills to quantitatively and qualitatively analyze experimental data and draw supportable conclusions
  • Knowledge of lab safety and EH&S safety requirements
  • Knowledge with desktop computers and general office applications
  • Demonstrated knowledge in quality control and improvement

Nice-to-haves

  • California Public Health Microbiologist (PHM) Certification
  • Demonstrated experience with biomedical and clinical laboratories and laboratory techniques such as DNA and RNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, PCR, protein expression and purification, and enzyme assays
  • Demonstrated experience with database and laboratory information management systems
  • Demonstrated experience in common laboratory skills, e.g., pipetting, reagent preparation, and sterile technique
  • Demonstrated experience with the analysis of large data sets
  • Skills to conduct exacting and organized lab work
  • Knowledge and familiarity with methods of bacterial culture
  • Knowledge to adapt, design and troubleshoot experimental protocols
  • Knowledge of general laboratory operations, e.g., ordering supplies, maintaining equipment, maintaining a safe working environment, etc.
