About the position

The Staff Research Scientist at Carbon will play a pivotal role in the commercialization of new resin products, working at the intersection of hardware, software, and molecular science. This position involves collaborating with a diverse team to ensure product quality and consistency, while also supporting customers in the application of Carbon's resin technologies. The role requires a hands-on approach to quality assurance and product specification, with a focus on improving resin performance and batch consistency.

Responsibilities

  • Support the scale-up of printing and post-processing of Carbon's resin technologies at customer sites and contract manufacturers, including travel to customer locations.
  • Work closely with customers to understand their application needs and process limitations to innovate and design next-generation resins.
  • Evaluate the design, measurement, and process robustness of new Carbon resins to understand the impact of batch-to-batch variation on product performance.
  • Connect liquid-level polymer resin properties with 3D printed part mechanical and accuracy properties.
  • Design experiments to assess the material property response of various individual variables in the resin formulation, printing, or post-processes.
  • Lead the determination of resin specifications and test methods for internal and external quality control purposes.
  • Identify the root cause of resin-related problems during scale-up or after commercialization, working with a cross-functional team.
  • Design tests to evaluate hypotheses and drive process improvements accordingly.
  • Travel internationally and domestically to customers as needed (up to 20% of the time).

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in Polymer Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field with 5-10 years of industrial experience focused on quality assurance or product specification setting.
  • Hands-on experience with a broad range of polymer material characterization techniques in both liquid and solid form, including viscosity, color, GPC, FTIR, DSC, TGA, tensile and tear with Instron, DMA, etc.
  • Experience with UV-curing chemistry and/or polyurethane chemistry is highly preferred.
  • Ability to draw conclusions and develop actionable next steps from ambiguous and incomplete data sets.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical skills with good data tracking and presentation ability.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience interacting with customers and/or suppliers is highly preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with UV-curing chemistry and/or polyurethane chemistry is highly preferred.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive total rewards package including equity, benefits, and time off programs.
