About the position

The Senior Software Engineer role at Gusto is part of the Developer Experience Team, which focuses on empowering over 200 Product Engineers by building tools and services that enhance their efficiency and productivity. This position involves engaging in all phases of the Software Development Lifecycle, ensuring seamless communication between services, improving infrastructure and deployment strategies, and contributing to the overall happiness and productivity of the engineering team.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure seamless communication between services with minimal downtime and quick recovery.
  • Collaborate with the engineering team to establish best practices for writing, maintaining, and running reliable services.
  • Improve infrastructure setup and deployment strategies.
  • Impact the productivity and happiness of the engineering team through the tools developed.
  • Collaborate with the tools development team to enhance the deployment pipeline.
  • Participate in pager-duty rotation to address issues, primarily during work hours.
  • Work with product engineering teams to ensure high performance of services.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in a Platform, SRE, or DevOps role using a Ruby/Kubernetes/AWS stack or similar technologies.
  • 10+ years of experience coding in Ruby, Golang, or similar languages with strong software engineering skills.
  • 5+ years of experience with Buildkite or similar tools for designing and implementing sophisticated Release and Deploy tooling on Kubernetes.
  • Experience developing best practices for secure infrastructure, CI systems, and service-oriented applications.
  • Proficiency in technologies such as Kubernetes, AWS, Ruby, Rails, MySQL, and Redis.
  • Strong focus on security and compliance when handling personal data.
  • Thorough testing of infrastructure changes with attention to detail.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with additional programming languages or technologies related to DevOps and infrastructure management.
  • Familiarity with agile development methodologies.
