About the position

Rivian is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Staff DevOps Engineer to further our DevOps initiatives and drive continuous integration, software delivery, and deployment. In this role, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams to design, implement, and manage our infrastructure and deployment pipelines, while providing technical guidance and mentorship to the team. Your expertise will be critical in ensuring the reliability, scalability, and security of our systems. As a Staff DevOps Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining scalable and fault-tolerant CI/CD pipelines for building the Android base operating system. You will also re-architect Android and QNX based builds for maintainability and reliability, ensuring efficient release management and development processes in collaboration with development and quality assurance teams. You will champion the integrity of the build system, integrate third-party and open-source software, and identify requirements to develop tools that enhance developer productivity in the build environment. Participation in an on-call rotation to support the production build environment will be required, along with monitoring and troubleshooting system and application performance to ensure high availability and reliability of production systems. Additionally, you will provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior team members, fostering a culture of continuous learning and growth. Staying up to date with emerging technologies and industry trends will be essential, as you will evaluate their potential impact on our infrastructure and recommend relevant solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable and fault-tolerant CI/CD pipelines for building the Android base operating system.
  • Re-architect Android and QNX based builds for maintainability and reliability.
  • Collaborate closely with development and quality assurance teams to ensure efficient release management and development processes.
  • Champion the integrity of the build system.
  • Integrate third-party and open-source software in the build system.
  • Identify requirements and develop tools to enhance developer productivity in the build environment.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation to support the production build environment.

Requirements

  • BS or MS in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 4+ years of industry experience as a DevOps Engineer or similar role.
  • 3+ years of experience with Android OS, QNX and embedded Linux build workflows.
  • 3+ years of experience with build tools like GNU Make, Cmake, Soong, Ninja, Gradle and Bazel.
  • 3+ years of experience with developing tools for software products - Android/ Linux / QNX preferred.
  • Fundamental understanding of OS drivers and packages.
  • Proficiency with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform, including infrastructure provisioning and management.
  • Expertise in designing and implementing CI/CD pipelines using tools like GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, or CircleCI.
  • Proficiency with infrastructure as code tools such as Helm, Terraform, or CloudFormation.
  • Hands-on experience with containerization technologies like Docker and orchestration frameworks such as Kubernetes.
  • Experience with monitoring and logging tools like Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, or ELK Stack.
  • Strong scripting and automation skills using languages such as Bash or Python.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
