About the position

Blackhawk Network (BHN) is seeking a Staff Software Engineer specializing in Data Science and Machine Learning to enhance our product offerings through advanced risk modeling and business forecasting. This role is pivotal in driving data-driven decision-making across the organization. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will lead the research charter for Data & Decision Science, empowering business stakeholders with insights that inform their decisions and strategic planning. You will be part of a collaborative team of Data Scientists, where you will provide mentorship and foster a culture of comprehensive business analysis, taking ownership of modeling environments and risk engines. Your expertise will help establish best practices for rapid prototyping, allowing for quick iterations and continuous research development. In this position, you will work closely with multi-disciplinary teams to tackle real-world data science challenges. This includes analyzing specific questions and developing reusable solutions that can be scaled across the organization. You will also collaborate with product, engineering, and operations teams to prioritize critical inquiries and deliver scalable, reproducible solutions based on data insights. Additionally, you will partner with software and data engineers to implement statistical and econometric modeling techniques that drive business value. The ideal candidate will possess a strong academic background, with a Master's or PhD in Statistics, Decision Sciences, Applied Mathematics, Economics, or Computer Science, along with extensive professional experience in data science. You will be expected to demonstrate a robust understanding of advanced mathematics, particularly in statistics and probability theory, as well as proficiency in machine learning techniques. Your role will also involve the creation, deployment, and performance evaluation of machine learning models, ensuring they are optimized for real-time predictions. Strong communication skills are essential, as you will need to articulate complex concepts clearly and adapt your approach to various stakeholders across different seniority levels. A passion for collaboration and a commitment to helping teammates grow and learn will be key attributes for success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Own the research charter for Data & Decision Science to enable data-driven decision-making.
  • Mentor a team of Data Scientists and promote a culture of comprehensive business analysis.
  • Take ownership of modeling environments and risk engines.
  • Evangelize best practices for rapid prototyping and continuous research.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to solve real-world data science problems.
  • Analyze specific questions and create reusable solutions.
  • Work with product, engineering, and operations teams to prioritize important questions.
  • Provide scalable and reproducible solutions based on data insights.
  • Partner with software and data engineers to employ statistical and econometric modeling.

Requirements

  • Masters or PhD in Statistics, Decision Sciences, Applied Mathematics, Economics or Computer Science or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years of overall professional experience with 6+ years in data science.
  • Strong background in advanced mathematics, statistics, and probability theory.
  • Expertise in feature engineering, A/B testing, statistical modeling, and machine learning.
  • Demonstrated experience in creating, deploying, and evaluating machine learning models.
  • Experience with building and deploying scalable, low latency RESTful services for real-time predictions.
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL.
  • Experience in conducting research and creating on-demand reports.
  • Ability to handle large datasets and discover hidden patterns using data visualization tools.
  • Strong communication skills to articulate complex concepts clearly.
