About the position

The Staff Software Engineer - Web Applications at GEICO is a senior-level role focused on building high-performance, low-maintenance web platforms and applications. This position plays a crucial role in transforming the insurance business by transitioning from a traditional IT model to a tech-driven organization. The engineer will ensure a frictionless customer experience while maintaining high standards of protection and availability, contributing to a culture of psychological safety and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Scope, design, and build scalable, resilient distributed systems
  • Build product definition and leverage technical skills to drive towards the right solution
  • Engage in cross-functional collaboration throughout the entire software lifecycle
  • Lead design sessions and code reviews with peers to elevate engineering quality
  • Define, create, and support reusable application components/patterns
  • Utilize programming languages like Python, Objective C, JavaScript, TypeScript, Dart, and container orchestration services like Docker and Kubernetes
  • Mentor other engineers and share best practices
  • Utilize developer tooling across the software development life cycle for advanced-level Web/UI design, implementation, and maintenance activities

Requirements

  • Fluency and specialization with at least two modern programming languages such as Python, Objective C, JavaScript, TypeScript, JSX, Dart
  • Proven understanding of micro-services architecture and extensible REST APIs
  • Experience in leveraging PowerShell scripting and using REACT testing library
  • Fluency in DevOps concepts, Cloud Architecture, and Azure DevOps Operational Framework
  • Experience with application monitoring tools and performance assessments
  • In-depth knowledge of CS data structures and algorithms
  • Experience with continuous delivery and infrastructure as code
  • Strong critical thinking, decision making, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with architecture and design
  • Experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, or another cloud service
  • Experience in open-source frameworks
  • Experience with XCode, VS Code, or a similar IDE
  • Experience in Risk assessment
