About the position

The Staff Engineering Manager is a leadership role focused on guiding the data engineering team to develop a high-performing open-source solution that integrates with various applications. This position is responsible for leading the claims data strategy and executing a technical roadmap to enhance product delivery and unlock new engineering capabilities. The role involves collaboration with multiple teams to ensure alignment with governance initiatives and to drive process improvements.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and raise appropriate project risks, presenting detailed and implementable solutions or alternatives.
  • Understand how requirements and design choices may impact systems across multiple areas.
  • Report on team progress for projects and key metrics, presenting ideas for improvement.
  • Initiate and support performance evaluations of team members.
  • Cultivate a culture that motivates all levels of performers to higher achievement.
  • Identify technical or analytical skill gaps and craft remediation plans.
  • Execute difficult conversations on development and performance.
  • Craft and deliver strategic arguments to drive projects for process improvement and customer experience.
  • Manage communication with leadership and provide feedback when appropriate.
  • Administer coaching and performance improvement plans.
  • Craft compliant quality documentation and manage warning administration or terminations.
  • Develop and report on the team budget and results achieved.
  • Contribute to team planning processes and surface associate-level proposals.
  • Lead people, products, and processes to innovate data-driven transformations.
  • Build strong relationships with tech teams and business partners.
  • Work independently while being part of a cohesive cross-functional management team.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of data ingestion, transformation, management, quality, and lineage concepts.
  • Working knowledge of object-oriented development, design patterns, microservices, and unit testing.
  • Proven ability to learn technical concepts and adapt to new technologies quickly.
  • Strong knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).
  • Foundation in algorithms, data structures, and core computer science concepts.
  • Fluency with big data open-source tools (Spark, Iceberg, Superset, Flink).
  • Experience in data engineering and modern warehousing technologies (Snowflake).
  • Knowledge of Java, Python, .NET, and SDLC.
  • Experience with data ingestion and streaming tools (Kafka, Spark).
  • Experience with application monitoring tools and performance assessments.
  • Experience designing, building, optimizing, and scaling solutions using distributed computing.
  • Strong leadership experience in software or data engineering.
