About the position

The Staff Structural Detailer will play a crucial role in developing plans and preparing non-routine drawings that feature complex elements. This position requires the ability to interpret rough sketches, detailed engineering notes, or brief verbal guidance to create accurate and detailed drawings. The Staff Structural Detailer will work on a variety of projects, engaging with a diverse portfolio of project types and clients, which will enhance their experience and skill set in structural engineering. In this role, the individual will be responsible for planning and preparing detailed drawings by applying standardized drawing techniques. This will involve collecting initial drawings, calculations, and design ideas from engineers, and synthesizing relevant data into coherent and complete initial design models for review and modification. The Staff Structural Detailer will also be expected to apply company, client, and project drafting standards and procedures to draft control schematics, wiring diagrams, and equipment connection diagrams. Collaboration is key in this position, as the Staff Structural Detailer will coordinate with engineers and project managers to understand project requirements and verify design details according to company standards and best practices. The role will encompass a range of drawing production work, including problem analysis, layout, detailing, and drafting on projects of substantial variety and complexity. The individual will also perform drafting activities alongside designers and drafters in other disciplines, ensuring a cohesive approach to project execution. Effective communication is essential, as the Staff Structural Detailer will need to correspond with internal design resources and external clients and personnel. The position also involves executing design changes and project drawing revisions, maintaining CAD proficiency, and striving to master current CAD systems. The Staff Structural Detailer will be expected to comply with all company policies and standards while performing other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Develop plans and prepare non-routine drawings with complex features using information from rough sketches, detailed engineering notes, or brief verbal guidance.
  • Plan and prepare detailed drawings by applying standardized drawing techniques from detailed sketches, verbal instructions, and notes under the direction of an engineer.
  • Collect initial drawings, calculations, and design ideas from engineers, and combine relevant data into coherent and complete initial design models for review and modification.
  • Apply company, client, and project drafting standards and procedures to draft control schematics, wiring diagrams, and equipment connection diagrams.
  • Coordinate with engineers and project managers to understand project requirements and verify design details according to company standards and best practices.
  • Provide a range of drawing production work including problem analysis, layout, detailing, and drafting on projects of substantial variety and complexity.
  • Perform drafting activities with designers and drafters in other disciplines.
  • Communicate and correspond with internal design resources and external clients and personnel.
  • Execute design changes and project drawing revisions.
  • Maintain CAD proficiency and work toward mastering current CAD systems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Structural Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program.
  • Or Bachelor of Science in Structural or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
  • Master of Science degree in Structural Engineering may be substituted for 1 year experience.
  • 3 years of structural engineering experience, consulting preferred.
  • Successful completion (i.e. passing) FE or EIT preferred.
  • Strong knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Proficient in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Strong computer skills include structural analysis programs (e.g., RISA 3D), AutoCAD, ETABS, SAFE and BIM (e.g., Revit and Tekla).
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
