About the position

Wirecutter is looking for a staff writer to focus on style: apparel and accessories. You’ll find the best of the best for categories like T-shirts, sneakers, sunglasses, and tote bags–research-heavy projects that can often take weeks or months to complete. You may also be asked to write lighter fare, perhaps testing an Insta-famous bathrobe to see if it lives up to the hype or explaining how to best care for a pricey leather jacket. You have a firm grasp of all categories of style—apparel, accessories and bags, shoes—and knowledge of the category landscape, from emerging brands and social media trends to cult-status standbys. You’re a fashion enthusiast who knows how to apply a skeptic’s eye when reading marketing claims, and while you have a wide array of industry contacts, you also understand the importance of journalistic standards and integrity. You’re passionate about cutting through the noise of the fashion industry to help people find the right products for their unique situations and thoughtful about making inclusive recommendations. You are comfortable collaborating with team members and editors, but should also enjoy spending a good portion of time researching, testing, writing, and responding to edits independently. As a Wirecutter writer, you’ll also recognize the importance of considering those with different needs and diverse perspectives when writing guides or other pieces of journalism. You will have the potential to be remote, though preference will be given to candidates based in New York City.

  • Research, report, and write long form guides and short form posts on style and accessories; think creatively about sources, identify experts, and conduct meaningful short- and long-term tests
  • Request product samples and process their return
  • Call experts and review academic journal articles and other scientific data; methodically scan user reviews and forums to find what matters to readers
  • Collaborate with editors to conceive new content and formats and move ideas from pitch to publish
  • Collaborate with photo, video and illustration departments to produce visuals to support guides and short-form articles
  • Partner with our discovery and audience teams to identify trends and outside experts worth profiling
  • Work with our community team to respond to reader feedback and questions; work with our affiliate team to resolve stock issues on recommendations; work with our operations team on product orders and testing plans
  • May attend trade shows and product news events to build contacts and expertise in relevant topics
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Requirements

  • 2+ years experience writing experience at a major publication, media company, or service journalism outlet
  • Experience working collaboratively through multiple rounds of edits and balancing several reporting projects and deadlines simultaneously
  • Experience with detailed research that involves gathering large amounts of data, organizing it and probing the work for inaccuracies
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the style and accessory beat–familiarity with established and also fledgling brands, and a point of view on style

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience finding ways to get in touch with brands and other experts
  • Experience working in a remote work environment, with a distributed team that works across time zones
  • An inherent skepticism of marketing claims and a commitment to high standards of reporting and accuracy
  • Experience doing original reporting and research for features or how-to guides; experience covering products or services, especially involving hands-on testing, is also valuable
