About the position

The Stand-By Vessel Operator is responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of vessels in various water bodies. This role involves inspecting vessels and equipment, utilizing navigational tools, and directing crew activities during operations. The operator must adapt to environmental conditions and ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect vessels and peripheral equipment prior to voyage to ensure efficient and safe operation.
  • Utilize navigational equipment, weather forecasts, and tide/current predictions to ensure the safety of the vessel and crew.
  • Operate the vessel in oceans, bays, lakes, rivers, or coastal waters as directed by the supervisor.
  • Deploy, tow, and anchor containment boom and other spill response equipment as necessary.
  • Ensure job-related equipment is in good working order and ready for deployment or drill notifications.
  • Document and maintain current vessel logs and inspections.
  • Provide clear direction to deckhands and passengers to ensure safety during navigational or event hazards.
  • Conduct onboard safety drills and provide continuous training in safety and seamanship skills.
  • Complete paperwork to follow procedures and regulations, including customer logbooks and EPA Discharge logs.
  • Perform other general work, confined space entry, spill response, and industrial maintenance as directed by the supervisor.

Requirements

  • Minimum 1 year related experience in the maritime industry.
  • Valid Driver's License with a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) that meets Business Driving standards.
  • Knowledge of operation, navigation, electrical and mechanical systems of assigned vessel.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple responsibilities efficiently.

Nice-to-haves

  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) certification.
  • Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) certified by US Coast Guard.
  • Local Boating Certificate(s).
  • State specific HAZWOPER certification including required refresher certificates.
  • CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Marine Crane Operator Certification.
  • Cold-Water Survival Certificates.
