About the position

As the State Income/Franchise Tax Controversy Manager at UnitedHealth Group, you will oversee the management of state tax audits, appeals, and litigation processes. This role involves leading a team in responding to information requests from state taxing authorities, managing the state income/franchise tax notice process, and co-managing the state tax credits/incentives process. You will also be involved in compliance, planning, and special projects related to state income/franchise tax, contributing to the overall mission of improving health outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead teams in responding to information requests from state taxing authorities with oversight from senior leaders
  • Work with senior leaders to make strategic decisions to resolve controversies with state taxing authorities
  • Draft protests/appeals and lead hearings in coordination with senior leaders
  • Assist team members with responding to notices from state taxing authorities, ensuring timely responses and tracking responses to over 1,000 state income/franchise tax notices received annually
  • Co-manage the state tax credits/incentives process, including the R&D credit
  • Assist the team with reviewing tax returns and related workpapers
  • Manage special projects, such as tax planning and M&A due diligence projects

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a similar field, or a Juris Doctor
  • 7+ years tax or accounting experience in a public accounting firm or 4+ years in a law firm with controversy/litigation experience
  • Proven excellent writing and verbal communication skills
  • Proven desire to work in a team environment
  • Proven solid organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks at one time
  • Proven eagerness to learn state tax technical concepts
  • Proven to be a dedicated team player who is committed to training the team

  • Juris Doctor
  • Experience writing protests/appeals or similar advocacy compositions
  • Experience representing taxpayers or other parties in hearings
  • Tax technical background in state income/franchise tax
