About the position

The Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation is seeking a State Lands Forester for the Rutland District. This role involves managing and enhancing public lands, focusing on forest management and recreation projects across 40,000 acres. The forester will work within a collaborative team to implement various management strategies, including wildlife habitat management and invasive plant control, while also overseeing contracts and seasonal staff.

Responsibilities

  • Implement forest management and recreation projects on public lands.
  • Conduct forest resource inventory, assessment, and management.
  • Prepare and administer timber sales.
  • Maintain and rehabilitate forest roads.
  • Manage invasive plant species and improve timber stands.
  • Develop and oversee contracts for various projects.
  • Provide day-to-day direction to seasonal staff.
  • Assess and plan for forest-based recreation resources.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in forestry, natural resources, biological or physical science, engineering, or an environmental field AND four years of professional experience in a related field.
  • Bachelor's degree in forestry, natural resources, biological or physical science, engineering, or an environmental field AND two years of professional experience in a related field.
  • Master's degree or higher in forestry, natural resources, biological or physical science, engineering, or an environmental field.
  • One year of experience as Forestry Professional II with the State of Vermont.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator's license.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of GIS and effective communication skills.
  • Project management experience.
  • Ability to develop strong working relationships.
