About the position

The Stationary Engineer position at City College of New York (CUNY) involves the operation, maintenance, adjustments, testing, and repair of various systems within public buildings, including steam power plants, air conditioning systems, chiller plants, and fire protection systems. Under general supervision, the engineer will be responsible for ensuring that all electro-mechanical building equipment and related auxiliary systems are functioning optimally. This role requires a hands-on approach to managing and maintaining equipment such as gas and oil-fired boilers, furnaces, steam reducing stations, engines, turbines, pumps, valves, heat exchangers, generators, motors, and water treatment systems. The engineer will also oversee cooling towers, condensers, evaporators, and emergency generators, ensuring that all systems are operational for heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and lighting in public buildings. In addition to equipment operation, the Stationary Engineer will perform periodic inspections and repairs, schedule and oversee preventive maintenance, and direct the work of subordinate personnel, including oilers and high-pressure plant tenders. The engineer will take responsible charge of a watch, supervising and directing subordinates while addressing emergency repairs as needed. Operating control consoles in control rooms for building maintenance and automation systems is also a key responsibility. The engineer will adjust HVAC systems' water chemistry through testing and treatment, prepare requisitions for materials and spare parts, and maintain logs and records of equipment performance and maintenance activities. The position requires a valid High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer license and additional certifications related to refrigerating machines and fire safety. The role may involve physical activities in confined areas, including boiler rooms and HVAC systems, and requires the handling of chemicals and working around hazardous materials. All licenses and certifications must be maintained throughout employment.
