About the position

The Research Spatial Analyst position at the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission (PSMFC) involves supporting NOAA Fisheries in analyzing the impacts of offshore wind energy (OWE) on commercial fisheries and coastal communities along the US West Coast. The role focuses on quantifying economic impacts and behavioral responses of fishers to displacement caused by OWE and climate change, utilizing advanced modeling techniques and collaboration with various scientific disciplines.

Responsibilities

  • Lead analyses that quantify economic impacts of fishery displacement from OWE areas in a changing climate.
  • Develop a set of research questions that can be addressed within the FishSET package.
  • Select specific fisheries, ports, and coastal communities for detailed analyses.
  • Choose relevant economic metrics to understand the scope of impacts.
  • Develop scenarios for analyses comparing impacts with and without climate change.
  • Integrate species distribution model outputs into R code for future expected catch.
  • Review and develop necessary R code and functions within the FishSET package.
  • Communicate results clearly to social and natural scientists, resource managers, and stakeholders.
  • Produce manuscripts for scientific peer review.
  • Provide input and interim data products to resource managers and NOAA's Offshore Wind Energy Coordination team.

Requirements

  • Experience with collaboration and building teams.

  • Programming proficiency in R and R Shiny.
  • Ability to work independently and in groups.
  • Experience with Git or other version control systems.

  • Ability to communicate across science disciplines.
