About the position

The STEP Clinician position at UMass Memorial Health is a full-time role focused on providing comprehensive mental health services to clients experiencing First Episode Psychosis (FEP) and their families. This position is part of the Screening and Treatment of Early Psychosis (STEP) Team, which operates under the Coordinated Specialty Care (CSC) model. The clinician will be responsible for conducting eligibility screenings, comprehensive intake assessments, and follow-up evaluations to gather clinical information and inform treatment planning. The role involves meeting with clients to provide individual counseling, assisting them in achieving their treatment goals, and writing detailed treatment plans that include behaviorally based goals and objectives. Documentation of service delivery and progress notes is essential, adhering to departmental standards. In addition to direct client care, the STEP Clinician will participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings and case discussions, seeking consultation as needed. The clinician will also engage in utilization management, employing standards set by the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and assisting in re-accreditation processes. Building working relationships with external agencies and organizations is crucial for facilitating referrals and care coordination. The clinician will work closely with the MMAT clinical team, which includes Recovery Coaches, Nurses, and Psychiatrists, to ensure comprehensive client services. The position requires compliance with established departmental policies and procedures, participation in meetings and training sessions, and a commitment to quality improvement in daily operations. The clinician is expected to maintain a professional environment that respects diverse views and approaches, contributing to a culture of professionalism and acceptance within the workplace. Regular attendance and the ability to perform other related duties as required are also essential components of this role.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct eligibility screenings and comprehensive intake and follow-up assessments to assess eligibility, gather clinical information, and inform treatment planning.
  • Conduct client evaluations including bio-psychosocial assessment, diagnostic formulation, and initial treatment plan recommendations.
  • Meet with clients to provide individual counseling and assist clients in attaining treatment goals.
  • Write treatment plans including client's strengths with behaviorally based goals and objectives, and document service delivery in accordance with department standards.
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings and case discussions, recognizing and seeking consultation as needed.
  • Participate in utilization management, employing CARF standards, and assist in re-accreditation processes as needed.
  • Build working relationships with agencies and organizations in support of clients' recovery to facilitate referrals and care coordination.
  • Work closely with MMAT clinical team (Recovery Coach, Nurse, and Psychiatrist) to coordinate client services.
  • Comply with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
  • Attend a variety of meetings, conferences, and seminars as required or directed.
  • Demonstrate use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
  • Comply with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
  • Respect diverse views and approaches, demonstrating Standards of Respect, and contribute to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility, and acceptance toward all employees, patients, and visitors.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
  • Perform other similar and related duties as required or directed.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in a clinical course of study in behavioral health (social work, psychology, marriage and family therapy, counseling or related field) that meets the academic requirements for independent licensure in psychology, social work, marriage and family therapy, or mental health counseling in Massachusetts.
  • Licensure as LMHC, LCSW, LMFT, or actively working towards licensure in Massachusetts.
  • Ability to perform diagnostic and risk assessments using current accepted tools and practices to determine appropriate level of care.
  • Ability to develop and implement treatment plans which are behaviorally oriented, measurable, and appropriate for the identified level of care.
  • Ability and interest to learn and implement evidence-based models of treatment for opioid addiction.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual preferred.
  • A minimum of one year of experience in behavioral health or addiction is preferred.
  • Clinical expertise specific to adults with substance use conditions and co-occurring severe and persistent mental illness.
