The Sterile Processing Clerk (Instrument Processing Technician) plays a crucial role in the surgical environment by ensuring that all surgical instruments and equipment are properly maintained, cleaned, and sterilized. This position is essential for the safety and efficiency of surgical procedures, as it directly impacts patient care and outcomes. The Sterile Processing Clerk will work under the supervision of the Clinical Leader or Registered Nurse, adhering to strict protocols and standards for sterilization and aseptic techniques. In this role, the clerk will be responsible for the cleaning, wrapping, sterilizing, and disinfecting of surgical instruments and equipment. They will also maintain the organization and functionality of the instrument processing area, ensuring that all tools are readily available and in optimal condition for surgical teams. The clerk will engage in practices that uphold the highest standards of sterile technique, which is vital for preventing infections and ensuring patient safety. Additionally, the Sterile Processing Clerk will have crossover responsibilities that may include purchasing supplies and managing inventory in accordance with facility policies. This multifaceted role requires a keen understanding of sterilization technologies and the ability to differentiate between various disinfection methods for specific instruments. The clerk will also be expected to complete a Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) course within the first 90 days of employment, or provide documentation of current certification. Overall, this position is integral to the surgical team, contributing to the overall quality of care provided to patients undergoing surgical procedures.
