About the position

The Sterile Processing Technician at Connecticut Children's Medical Center is responsible for the decontamination, preparation, sterilization, distribution, and control of medical-surgical instruments and supplies. This role is crucial in ensuring that surgical instruments are clean, functioning properly, and ready for use in various patient care areas, particularly in the Perioperative departments. The technician will work under the supervision of the Sterile Processing Manager and Lead Technician, contributing to the overall safety and efficiency of surgical procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Decontaminate, prepare, and sterilize medical-surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Perform high-level disinfection of surgical instruments according to established guidelines.
  • Inspect, assemble, and ensure the completeness of surgical instrument sets.
  • Monitor and record sterilization and disinfection processes, including handling failures and recalls.
  • Prepare and fill case carts with supplies and instruments based on preference cards.
  • Retrieve and deliver contaminated instruments from patient care areas to the decontamination area.
  • Issue and deliver medical-surgical instruments and supplies to various patient care areas.
  • Prepare and replenish emergency code carts and transport medication trays for replenishment.
  • Order and stock medical-surgical supplies as needed.
  • Be on call for weekends, holidays, and other necessary times as scheduled.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • One year of recent full-time Central Sterile Processing experience preferred.
  • Central Sterile Technician certification through CBSPD or IAHCSMM required within 18 months of hire if not currently certified.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures related to sterilization and decontamination.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Windows-based applications and basic computer skills.
  • Cultural competence in interactions with patients and families.
