About the position
The Sterile Processing Technician (SPT) position at UC San Diego is a critical role within the La Jolla Sterile Processing department, responsible for ensuring that all surgical instruments and equipment are properly sterilized and prepared for use in medical procedures. Under direct supervision, the technician will be accountable for all activities related to sterile processing, adhering to regulatory guidelines and hospital policies. This includes the meticulous record-keeping of sterilization processes and compliance with safety standards. The technician will also assist in ordering and procuring necessary equipment and instrumentation, ensuring that the surgical teams have everything they need for successful operations. The position requires working rotating shifts, including evenings and nights, with a schedule that includes Monday through Friday and rotating weekends. Selected candidates may be hired at different levels (Tech I, II, or III) based on their qualifications and experience. The role demands a high level of attention to detail and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, as the technician will be responsible for the decontamination, disinfection, and sterilization of surgical instruments. Additionally, the technician must demonstrate proficiency with various surgical procedures and instrumentation, as well as effective inventory management practices. Candidates for this position must possess the necessary certifications and experience, with a strong emphasis on compliance and safety in sterile processing. Responsibilities
- Ensure all surgical instruments and equipment are sterilized and assembled according to regulatory guidelines and hospital policy.
- Maintain compliance with all record-keeping requirements related to sterile processing.
- Assist with ordering and procuring equipment and instrumentation as needed.
- Demonstrate skill and proficiency with a variety of surgical procedures, instrumentation, and equipment.
- Implement effective inventory storage and retrieval practices.
- Perform decontamination, disinfection, and sterilization procedures of surgical instruments.
Requirements
- Sterile Processing Tech Certification (CRCST, CPSPD) for Tech III level.
- BART or BLS certification at the time of hire, with a commitment to obtain BART within six months of hire.
- Two years of recent experience in a similar role and setting for Tech II level.
- Three years of recent experience in a similar role and setting for Tech III level.
- Demonstrated skill and proficiency with a variety of surgical procedures, instrumentation, and equipment.
- Knowledge of effective inventory storage and retrieval practices.
- Completion of SPD course for Tech III level.
