About the position

The General Manager at Petco is responsible for leading a Pet Care Center in alignment with the company's vision of 'Healthier Pets. Happier People. Better World.' This role focuses on developing a high-performing team that drives sales growth while ensuring the welfare and proper care of all animals. The GM oversees all aspects of the center's operations, including talent acquisition, training, guest service, and financial performance, fostering a culture of teamwork and inclusion.

Responsibilities

  • Build a team that embodies the Petco brand by delivering exceptional service and driving guest loyalty.
  • Attract, hire, and retain a diverse team of top talent.
  • Train, coach, and develop leaders and hourly Pet Care Center partners in all areas and functions required to run the store efficiently and to Petco standards.
  • Create a professional environment that inspires and encourages the growth and engagement of partners.
  • Lead and implement a positive culture of teamwork, inclusion, and collaboration by working alongside the team, establishing priorities, and providing clear direction.
  • Ensure quick and courteous service to all Petco guests by helping partners determine the guest's needs and sharing product knowledge.
  • Responsible for all partner performance management in the Pet Care Center.
  • Demonstrate and support a continuous improvement and growth mindset.
  • Meet or exceed goals related to total Pet Care Center sales, profitability, and operational excellence.
  • Schedule and adjust labor hours & payroll to maximize productivity, achieve sales & payroll goals, and complete workload.
  • Review and interpret financial and operational reporting regularly, including Pet Care Center visits and audit results.
  • Identify underperforming metrics and develop strategies to improve and grow the business.
  • Market the Pet Care Center and its products, overseeing planning for on-site and community events.
  • Ensure the proper health, appearance, welfare, and handling of all animals.
  • Ensure merchandise is properly priced, displayed, and stocked according to inventory levels.
  • Complete and submit accounting, inventory management, and payroll paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Maintain the Pet Care Center's appearance according to operational standards and safety procedures.
  • Protect Petco pets & merchandise and minimize loss by ensuring all standards and procedures are met.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in a managerial role within retail or a similar environment.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire and develop a team.
  • Excellent customer service skills and a passion for pets.
  • Ability to analyze financial and operational data to drive business performance.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in the pet care industry or veterinary services.
  • Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising strategies.
  • Familiarity with community engagement and marketing initiatives.
