The Storm Lake Law Enforcement Dispatcher/Communications Center Specialist 1 position at the Iowa Department of Public Safety involves managing communications for law enforcement and emergency services. Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED.
  • Ability to pass a thorough background investigation conducted by the Department of Public Safety.
  • Ability to pass a physical and psychological evaluation, including normal hearing and vision corrected to 20/20.

Responsibilities

  • Elicit information from private citizens and state and federal agencies via telephone and forward it to the proper personnel.
  • Monitor equipment, isolate system problems, and notify repair services.
  • Receive road condition data from other communications centers and enter the information into the computer system.
  • Receive, transmit, and monitor messages from state, county, and municipal law enforcement or emergency services through two-way radio and communication systems.
  • Obtain confidential criminal records and traffic safety information from the IOWA System for law enforcement officers.
  • Elicit from callers the type of assistance needed and notify appropriate enforcement officials or emergency services.
  • Maintain contact with investigation officers by monitoring messages to alert them of suspected violence against officers involved.
  • Monitor, receive, and process all calls, tips, and written reports made to the Governor's School Safety Bureau (GSSB) anonymous reporting tool.
  • Assess and direct GSSB information expediently to the appropriate agency or first responder for follow-up action.
