About the position

The Construction Inspection Manager plays a crucial role in overseeing the inspection of Public Works construction projects to ensure compliance with city-approved plans and specifications. This includes checking the installation of water, sewer, and storm sewer systems, as well as paving and drainage work. The manager is responsible for coordinating projects with other departments and agencies, investigating complaints related to construction projects, and taking appropriate action to resolve issues. The position requires attending pre-construction meetings, reviewing construction plans, and generating reports on the condition of streets and infrastructure. The Construction Inspection Manager must possess a comprehensive understanding of construction practices and the ability to apply analytical judgment in decision-making. The role requires effective communication skills, as the manager will interact with contractors, city officials, and the public, often in stressful situations. Responsibilities

  • Supervises staff, including prioritizing and assigning work, conducting performance evaluations, and ensuring staff training.
  • Conducts on-site inspections of construction projects to ensure compliance with approved plans and city standards.
  • Coordinates projects with other departments and agencies, and investigates complaints related to assigned projects.
  • Attends pre-construction meetings and reviews construction plans, including traffic control and trench safety plans.
  • Generates overall ratings for the condition of streets and infrastructure, and fills out daily reports on project status.
  • Provides emergency response to Public Works issues after hours, including street problems and water/sewer issues.

Requirements

  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in construction inspection and management of Public Works, Development, or CIP projects, including supervisory responsibility.
  • Knowledge of construction practices, engineering terms, and the ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications.
  • Intermediate ability to apply mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, and measurements.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in managing multiple contractors and coordinating complex projects.
  • Familiarity with city regulations and standards related to public works construction.
