About the position

The Strategic Communications Specialist serves as the primary point of contact for all written communications within the department. This role is crucial in ensuring that all drafted content maintains a standardized and consistent brand voice, which the Specialist will develop and implement. The Specialist will conduct research and critically assess the objectives of various communications pieces, drafting, editing, and reviewing content as necessary. This position also leads internal communications, ensuring that information is accessible to employees across all levels and locations. Key responsibilities include serving as the editor and team lead for all written content creation, collaborating with team members to produce high-quality materials. The Specialist will write content for a variety of formats, including printed materials such as flyers, brochures, and newsletters, as well as digital communications like website content, intranet updates, and email campaigns. Additionally, the Specialist will compose public relations materials, including press releases and media kits, and assist senior executives in drafting communications for both internal and external audiences. The role requires evaluating the effectiveness of communication materials and recommending strategies for improvement. The Specialist will also collaborate with graphic designers to ensure that all materials adhere to appropriate standards and guidelines. A significant aspect of the job is leading internal communication strategies, developing an annual internal communications plan, and managing records in compliance with the Hampton Roads Transit Records Management Policy and Procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as editor/team lead for all written content creation and development.
  • Research internal and external communication needs and establish goals and objectives.
  • Write content for printed materials, including flyers, brochures, and newsletters.
  • Draft content for digital communications, including website updates and email campaigns.
  • Compose public relations content, including press releases and media kits.
  • Assist with drafting written communications on behalf of senior executives.
  • Edit, review, and proof content drafted by team members to ensure brand voice consistency.
  • Work with the technology team to post content to the website as needed.
  • Develop PowerPoints and slide decks for presentations.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of copy and materials and recommend revised communication strategies.
  • Collaborate with team on customer needs and develop communication solutions.
  • Collaborate with graphic designers from concept to finalization of materials.
  • Ensure all materials follow appropriate standards and guidelines.
  • Identify improvements that support operational excellence and business initiatives.
  • Lead internal communications strategies to ensure information flows to all employees.
  • Develop an annual internal communications plan and coordinate cross-functionally to implement it.
  • Manage records created and received in compliance with the Records Management Policy.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in communications, journalism, English, or a closely related field.
  • 4-6 years of experience writing corporate communications or similar work.
  • Experience with AP-style writing.
  • Strong communication skills, including writing and public speaking.
  • Experience with project management principles.
  • Ability to communicate information positively and effectively for various audiences.
  • Knowledge of developing and implementing communications plans.
  • Proven knowledge of public relations, communications, marketing, and media principles.
  • Highly organized and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Nice-to-haves
