About the position

The Street and Bridge Operations Technician III position is a full-time role within the South District Maintenance Division of the City of Austin's Transportation and Public Works Department. This position is responsible for a variety of street maintenance tasks, including operating heavy equipment, performing concrete finishing, and responding to citizen service requests. The role supports a 24/7 operation, requiring flexibility and open availability to address maintenance needs and emergencies.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with Right of Way (ROW) maintenance, including cutting grass and picking up debris.
  • Perform sidewalk maintenance, filling potholes, and surface replacements.
  • Operate light and heavy motorized equipment for street and bridge maintenance.
  • Respond to citizen and customer complaints and requests for service.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment before job assignments.
  • Collect and document infrastructure repair data using a work order management system.
  • Oversee traffic control at job sites, including placing cones and flags for safety.
  • Seal roadway cracks, pour and finish concrete, and place asphalt mix as needed.
  • Train lower-level technicians in maintenance tasks and safety procedures.
  • Lead and coordinate daily crew activities on job assignments.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.
  • Four years of experience in maintenance or construction, including two years in heavy-duty equipment operation or concrete finishing.
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL).
  • Ability to perform continuous outdoor activity and handle physical demands such as lifting up to 50 pounds.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience calculating materials for concrete or asphalt projects.
  • Experience with traffic control setup.
  • Experience operating specialized heavy equipment such as Paver, Loader, Skid Steer, Backhoe, and Haul Rig.
  • Experience using MAXIMO or similar Work Order Management Systems.
  • Tanker Endorsement.
