About the position

The City of Aurora is seeking dedicated and collaborative individuals to join our team as Street Operations Specialists. This position involves performing skilled work and related duties in the operation of heavy mechanized equipment to construct, repair, and maintain city streets and projects for the Public Works Department. The Streets Operations Specialist will operate heavy equipment such as road graders, front-end loaders, paving and milling machines, and other related equipment. Responsibilities include large asphalt patching, road grading, hauling material and equipment, asphalt overlay, drain and trench cleaning, excavation, and backfill. Additionally, the role requires performing snow and ice control operations on 12-hour rotating shifts, acting as a lead for other department operators, and ensuring that Temporary Traffic Control Plans are in place for scheduled and emergency operations. The position also involves servicing, maintaining, and making minor mechanical adjustments and repairs on assigned equipment. The Street Operations Specialist will assist in training other employees in equipment operation and may investigate citizen work order requests or accidents. This role requires on-call shifts duties 24/7 for a week per shift to manage dispatch calls supporting Police and Fire Departments with emergency/after-hour call outs. Responsibilities

  • Operates heavy equipment such as road graders, front-end loaders, paving and milling machines, and other related equipment.
  • Performs tasks such as large asphalt patching, road grading, hauling material and equipment, asphalt overlay, drain and trench cleaning, excavation, and backfill.
  • Performs snow and ice control operations on 12-hour rotating shifts, acting as a lead for other department operators.
  • Services, maintains, and makes minor mechanical adjustments and repairs on assigned equipment.
  • Assists in training other employees in equipment operation.
  • Acts as a Lead Worker supporting and working with the Street Supervisors.
  • Investigates citizen work order requests or accidents as needed.
  • Ensures Temporary Traffic Control Plans are in place for scheduled and emergency operations.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned, including acting as a supervisor when experience and judgment allow.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • At least three (3) years progressively responsible experience in the operation of medium and heavy equipment related to street construction and maintenance or equivalent.
  • Considerable knowledge of City of Aurora Street System/Snow and Ice Control Plan.
  • Knowledge of safety practices common to the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment, including FMCSA CDL pre/post trip inspections.
  • Knowledge of the practices and techniques of heavy equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Skilled in the use of hand and power tools and operation of heavy equipment related to street maintenance and construction.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform strenuous, physical, outdoor labor for extended periods of time, outside and in all weather conditions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Colorado Class A CDL, tanker endorsement, no tractor trailer restriction.
  • ATSSA Temporary Traffic Control Technician and Colorado Flagger Certification within six (6) months of employment.
  • RTD On-Track Safety Training Certification within six (6) months of employment.
  • Completion of the city's supervisory training within six (6) months of employment.
