About the position

Akima Infrastructure Services (AIS) is seeking a Level IV Structural Engineer to provide full-time structural design engineering support for minor facility modifications at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and the Pantex Plant in Amarillo, Texas. This role is crucial in ensuring the safety, security, and reliability of U.S. nuclear deterrent operations, which are essential to national security. The successful candidate will be part of a team that is dedicated to innovation and diversity, working in a challenging yet supportive environment. The position requires a strong commitment to the mission of AIS, which extends beyond staffing to support the communities of Alaska Native holders. As a Structural Engineer, the candidate will be responsible for developing structural designs, including detailed drawings for various construction materials such as concrete, steel, masonry, and timber. This includes preparing engineering instructions, data sheets, equipment specifications, and construction specifications. The engineer will also conduct design verifications, provide input to system engineers, and perform walkdowns in existing facilities to generate design documents and support craft personnel in the field. Familiarity with ASME Nuclear Quality Assurance (NQA-1) and consensus design codes is essential, as the role involves building evaluations, seismic analyses, and oversight of outside engineering firms. Candidates should have a minimum of 15-20 years of direct experience in structural engineering, with strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively interface with various stakeholders. The ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance is required, and candidates must be willing to work in a production environment. Pre-employment drug screening and medical examinations may be necessary, as this position is designated for ongoing random drug testing due to its nature within a nuclear regulated environment.
