About the position

As a Structural Engineer 3 specializing in Transmission Line Engineering at Black & Veatch, you will play a crucial role in addressing some of humanity's most pressing challenges through innovative infrastructure solutions. In this role, you will be expected to stay current with departmental design guides, standards, and applicable engineering codes, ensuring that your work aligns with Black & Veatch's policies and procedures. You will independently apply your knowledge to engineering tasks, contributing to the quality and continuous improvement initiatives of the company. Your responsibilities will include preparing a variety of moderately complex engineering deliverables, conducting research for equipment and materials selection, and managing data for engineering work. You will also be responsible for preparing complex engineering calculations and ensuring adherence to budget, schedule, and quality requirements. Collaboration is key in this position, as you will coordinate with internal and external team members on projects, ensuring that all details are aligned and communicated effectively. You will actively engage with clients to understand their interests and drivers, applying this understanding to enhance your performance and support business development efforts. Responsibilities

  • Continues to learn and remains current on departmental design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and Black and Veatch policies and procedures.
  • Independently applies knowledge and complies with Black and Veatch quality program relative to assigned tasks.
  • Prepares a variety of moderately complex engineering deliverables.
  • Performs complex research and develops recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection.
  • Collects, assimilates, and manages data for engineering work.
  • Prepares complex engineering calculations following standard methods and principles.
  • Understands and adheres to budget, schedule, and quality requirements.
  • Recognizes, defines and resolves problems within assigned area.
  • Assigns tasks to and coordinates with other internal/external team members on less complex projects.
  • Initiates contact with other disciplines as needed to identify and coordinate details of the work.
  • Actively seeks to understand client interests and drivers through normal client contact and through interaction and communication with project leadership.
  • Shares current knowledge of latest technology and processes.
  • May assist with performance management process, mentoring, recognition, and any corrective actions required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from a recognized accredited program.
  • Minimum of 3 years related work experience.
  • Strong PLS CADD experience and proficiency.
  • Advanced knowledge of engineering design principles and applicable design guides and standards related to assigned engineering discipline.
  • Proven strong written and verbal communications skills.
  • Ability to think quickly at the job site and in front of customer personnel.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with the design of utility-scale electrical transmission systems.
  • Structural design of transmission steel structures and their foundations.
  • Basic structural steel and concrete experience using 3D analysis and design software.
  • Previous client interaction experience with solid relationship-building abilities in pursuit of business opportunities.
