About the position

As a Structural Engineer 3 at Black & Veatch, you will play a crucial role in the design and implementation of transmission systems within a hybrid work environment. This position is designed for individuals who are eager to contribute to significant infrastructure projects that address some of humanity's most pressing challenges. You will be part of a team that supports three key market sectors: Governments & Environment, Energy & Process Industries, and Connectivity & Commercial. Your work will involve engaging with exciting projects globally, ranging from small community improvements to large-scale mega projects, all while focusing on your individual development and career growth. In this role, you will be expected to continuously learn and stay updated on departmental design guides, standards, and applicable engineering codes. You will apply your knowledge to ensure compliance with Black & Veatch's quality program and support continuous improvement initiatives. Your responsibilities will include preparing a variety of moderately complex engineering deliverables, performing complex research, and developing recommendations for equipment and materials selection. You will also manage data for engineering work, prepare complex calculations, and ensure adherence to budget, schedule, and quality requirements. Project coordination will be a key aspect of your role, where you will assign tasks and coordinate with internal and external team members on less complex projects. You will actively seek to understand client interests and apply this understanding to your work, potentially supporting business development activities. Additionally, you will share your knowledge of the latest technology and processes with your team, contributing to a culture of innovation and knowledge sharing. As a mentor, you may assist with performance management processes and help develop the skills of junior team members.

Responsibilities

  • Continues to learn and remains current on departmental design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and Black and Veatch policies and procedures.
  • Begins to independently apply knowledge and complies with Black and Veatch quality program relative to assigned tasks.
  • Prepares a variety of moderately complex engineering deliverables.
  • Performs complex research and develops recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection.
  • Collects, assimilates, and manages data for engineering work.
  • Prepares complex engineering calculations following standard methods and principles.
  • Understands and adheres to budget, schedule, and quality requirements.
  • Recognizes, defines and resolves problems within assigned area.
  • May provide direction and guidance to others.
  • Assigns tasks to and coordinates with other internal/external team members on less complex projects.
  • Initiates contact with other disciplines as needed to identify and coordinate details of the work.
  • Actively seeks to understand client interests and drivers through normal client contact and through interaction and communication with project leadership.
  • Applies understanding of client interests and drivers to their own behavior and performance of the work under his/her responsibility.
  • May provide support to business development or pursuit activities.
  • Shares current knowledge of latest technology and processes.
  • May assist with performance management process, mentoring, recognition, and any corrective actions required.

Requirements

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from a recognized accredited program.
  • Minimum of 3 years related work experience.
  • Strong PLS CADD experience and proficiency.
  • Advanced knowledge of engineering design principles and applicable design guides and standards related to assigned engineering discipline.
  • Previous client interaction experience with solid relationship-building abilities in pursuit of business opportunities.
  • Proven strong written and verbal communications skills.
  • Ability to think quickly at the job site and in front of customer personnel.
  • Good listening skills, customer focused, priority setting, delegation, teamwork and team building skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with the design of utility-scale electrical transmission systems.
  • Structural design of transmission steel structures and their foundations.
  • Basic structural steel and concrete experience using 3D analysis and design software.
