About the position

As a Structural Substation Engineer at Black & Veatch, you will play a crucial role in applying advanced engineering techniques and analyses to address complex problems within the field of structural engineering, specifically focusing on electrical substations. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with engineering standards and quality programs, preparing complex engineering deliverables, and managing project budgets, schedules, and quality requirements. You will also coordinate with internal and external team members on moderately complex projects, ensuring that client interests and drivers are effectively communicated and addressed. As a recognized technical specialist, you will have the opportunity to design complete projects of moderately complex scope and provide guidance and direction to others within your project and discipline. This position emphasizes continuous improvement and innovation, allowing you to contribute to the development of effective engineering solutions while fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment.

Responsibilities

• Apply advanced engineering techniques and analyses for problems and methods.
• Prepare a variety of complex engineering deliverables.
• Perform complex research and develop recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection.
• Manage assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirements.
• Plan and conduct independent evaluation, selection, and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria.
• Review lower-level engineering work or assignments.
• Actively coordinate with all other internal/external team members on moderately complex projects.
• Assist with identification of key client interests and drivers on less complex projects.
• Communicate client interests and drivers to project team members and develop approaches to accommodate these concerns.
• Design a complete project of moderately complex scope within an assigned practice area.

Requirements

• Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from a recognized accredited program.
• Minimum of 5 years related work experience.
• Valid PE license is required.
• Experience with the design of utility-scale electrical substations.
• Structural design experience of electrical substation steel structures and their foundations.
• Basic structural steel and concrete experience using 3D analysis and design software such as RISA 3D or STAAD Pro.
• Basic foundation design experience using analysis and design software such as L-Pile and RISA Foundation, SP-Mats, and SP-Col.
• Solid experience using EXCEL or similar spreadsheets and MathCAD design templates.
• Intermediate knowledge of engineering design principles and applicable design guides and standards related to assigned engineering discipline.
