About the position

As a Structural Engineer at Black & Veatch, you will play a pivotal role in leading and performing engineering analysis and design for a variety of structures, particularly within the industrial sector. This position offers the opportunity to develop project budgets and schedules while fostering relationships with clients at power generating facilities. You will be part of a dynamic team that supports multiple market sectors, including Governments & Environment, Energy & Process Industries, and Connectivity & Commercial. Your contributions will be essential in executing complex structural analysis, performing calculations, and preparing sketches and drawings for the design of industrial facilities and other complex structures. In this role, you will collaborate closely with process and systems engineers to execute multi-disciplinary design projects, ensuring effective communication and careful planning throughout the project lifecycle. You will supervise Structural Engineers and Structural Technicians, both domestically and internationally, overseeing the preparation of structural drawing packages, calculations, and specifications. As a leader, you will be responsible for guiding larger production teams and serving as the responsible charge for projects, ensuring adherence to engineering standards and quality control requirements. Your responsibilities will also include performing construction phase engineering duties, such as conducting site visits, responding to Requests for Information (RFIs), and reviewing contractor submittals. You will manage project administrative tasks, including preparation of design fee estimates, monitoring progress against budget and schedule, and implementing Black & Veatch's quality control requirements. This role requires the ability to lead a team in executing moderately complex projects with construction values of up to $100 million, providing guidance on design guides, standards, and applicable engineering codes. Continuous improvement efforts will be a key focus, as you will support and direct others in enhancing project outcomes and operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Execute complex structural analysis, perform calculations, and prepare sketches and drawings for the design of Industrial facilities and other complex structural facilities.
  • Collaborate with process and systems engineers in the execution of multi-disciplinary design projects, requiring communication and careful planning.
  • Supervise Structural Engineers and Structural Technicians in preparation of structural drawing packages, calculations, and specifications.
  • Lead larger production teams and serve as the responsible charge for projects.
  • Occasional travel to client sites during project development to collaborate with project stakeholders, estimated travel is up to 10%.
  • Perform construction phase engineering duties such as site visits, responding to RFIs, and review of contractor submittals.
  • Perform project administrative tasks, including preparation of design fee estimates, monitoring progress against budget and schedule, management of project changes, and implementation of Black & Veatch Quality Control requirements.
  • Lead a team to execute moderately complex projects with construction values of up to $100M.
  • Provide guidance and direction on department design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and B&V policies.
  • Assist in developing, maintaining, and updating engineering standards and provide technical guidance to others regarding projects and disciplines.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts and provide guidance and direction to others.
  • Implement resource management strategy including managing resources for a small group.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from a recognized accredited program.
  • Minimum of 8 years related work experience.
  • Professional registration or licensure in designated home office country, or in active pursuit of such registration.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in highly integrated Industrial and/or Manufacturing projects such as food products, animal feed, and consumer products.
  • Proficiency with non-structural software packages such as Bluebeam, ProjectWise, AutoCAD, and Revit.
  • Familiarity with the latest editions of the International Building Code, ASCE 7, ACI 318, AISC Steel Construction Manual.
  • Proficiency with structural analysis software such as RISA 3D, STAADPro, or SAP 2000.
