Holtec International is seeking a structural engineer/analyst to join its Applied Mechanics Group, contributing to the innovative design of the first of its kind small modular reactor (SMR). This position offers a unique opportunity to be part of a growing multidisciplinary team dedicated to designing the next generation of nuclear power plants. The engineer will be responsible for analyzing various structures, including metallic, reinforced concrete, steel-concrete composite, and soil-subgrade supported structures. These analyses will play a crucial role in supporting engineering requirements that lead to the licensing and construction of SMR-300 plants globally. The role involves utilizing and learning various methods and software to perform these analyses, ensuring that the designs meet the necessary standards and requirements. The engineer will execute and document analyses for a variety of structures, systems, and components (SSCs). This includes reviewing available concept designs based on ambiguous requirements and developing them into mature designs through critical thinking, literature research, and collaboration with other disciplines and vendors. The engineer will also support the preparation of design deliverables and presentations, communicating design progress in stakeholder meetings. Additionally, the role involves supporting the development of engineering and licensing requirements and documentation for nuclear SSCs. Typical analyses performed in this role include static and dynamic finite element analyses (FEA) using software such as ANSYS, LS-DYNA, and STAAD.Pro. The engineer will conduct drop and impact analyses, simulate seismic responses of structures, and perform soil-structure interaction (SSI) and fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analyses. Other responsibilities include beam and plate stress calculations using established principles of solid mechanics, ensuring that all analyses are thorough and well-documented.
