About the position

Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE) is seeking a curious, committed, and enthusiastic Structural Engineer to join our civil infrastructure team in Austin, Texas. The civil infrastructure team at WJE focuses on solving, repairing, and avoiding structural engineering problems for a variety of civil infrastructure projects, including bridges, ports and marine structures, water and wastewater treatment plants, nuclear structures, tunnels, dams, and other energy and industrial sectors. This role is pivotal in ensuring the integrity and functionality of critical infrastructure that supports communities and industries alike. Responsibilities

  • Assume responsibility for the day-to-day success of multiple projects, including serving as the technical project lead, acting as primary point of contact for clients, contractors, and project teams.
  • Train and mentor teammates while managing small-to-medium projects, as appropriate.
  • Perform on-site investigations, condition assessments, and construction administration, which may include documenting distress, performance evaluation, and field testing.
  • Collect data and samples, and troubleshoot details during field investigations.
  • Analyze field data and perform research and review of modern and historic construction documents, governing codes, and design guidelines to facilitate analysis, problem-solving, and repair design.
  • Complete analysis using a combination of hand calculations and analysis software.
  • Prepare conceptual, preliminary, and final client deliverables, including written reports, calculation packets, structural construction documents, repair design details, and project specifications.
  • Contribute to company-wide objectives through involvement in office and company development initiatives, in-house Technical Resource Groups (TRGs), research projects, and relevant industry committees.

Requirements

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Texas or ability to obtain by comity; SE licensure is a plus.
  • Master's degree in civil/structural engineering or related field; significant relevant expertise will be considered in lieu of an advanced degree.
  • Minimum five years of relevant structural engineering industry experience, with a demonstrated interest in civil infrastructure and/or problem-solving.
  • Effective technical, graphical, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Team player mindset with a willingness to proactively take on various roles and responsibilities.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and adapt to changing demands while maintaining productive interpersonal relationships and a high standard of excellence, integrity, and attention to detail.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with non-destructive evaluation and instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with structural analysis and design for repair, retrofit, and rehabilitation of existing structures.
