About the position

We are seeking an entry-level structural engineer to join our cold-formed steel department in our Fairfax, VA office. The Engineer will be responsible for overseeing the entire project cycle, which includes design, development, and project completion. This role requires the Engineer to prepare engineering analyses for review by their supervisor, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and solid client relationships as keys to success in this position. The Engineer will engage in various essential duties, including preparing engineering analyses of projects, which encompass preliminary design and calculations. They will also be tasked with preparing and interpreting blueprints, schematic drawings, layouts, and other visual aids. Managing the construction document printing process and addressing project issues will be part of their responsibilities. The Engineer will review and critique proposed changes to engineering standards, policies, or details, ensuring compliance with adopted engineering standards and good engineering practices. Additionally, the Engineer will study contracts and the scope of work for their projects, familiarize themselves with quality control procedures, and incorporate feedback from supervisors into future projects. Delivering projects within established timeframes while handling multiple projects simultaneously is crucial. The Engineer will work under the guidance of a Project Manager and will be involved in construction administration for simple projects, observing and studying contracts and scopes of work. Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare engineering analysis of projects to include: preliminary design and calculations
  • Prepare and interpret blueprints, schematic drawings, layouts and other visual aids
  • Manage construction document printing process
  • Manage project issues
  • Review and critique proposed changes to engineering standards, policies, or details
  • Review development plans for compliance with adopted engineering standards and good engineering practices
  • Study contracts and scope of work for own projects
  • Familiarize self with quality control procedures
  • Study comments provided by supervisors and incorporate into future projects
  • Deliver projects within established time periods
  • Respond to comments given by supervisor
  • Handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Familiarize self with and select appropriate standard details for projects
  • Markup, Layout, and Redline standard details for simple projects
  • Work in group under Project Manager
  • Review specs for projects on which you are working
  • Construction Administration (CA) on simple projects
  • Observe CA on own projects
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field
  • 0-4 years of design experience
  • EIT license preferred
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization
  • Advanced math skills and ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state and local building codes and safety laws
  • Possession of a valid state driver's license within 60 days of employment
