About the position

The Structural Engineer & Designer positions within Southern Company's Transmission Civil Design group are responsible for structural design work that supports the Transmission and Distribution Substation Design Group and the Transmission Line Design Group. The roles involve producing engineering drawings, specifications, and material requirements for structural steel and concrete foundations, emphasizing safety, quality, scheduling, and cost management. The positions require a combination of in-office and remote work, with some travel expected.

Responsibilities

  • Make SAFETY our number one priority using a 'Safety First' mentality and leading by example.
  • Prepare high quality calculation and design packages needed to construct substation and transmission facilities using CAD-based tools, based on Southern Company design standards.
  • For Structural Engineer: Design and analyze new or modified existing substation structures, perform reinforced concrete foundation design and structural steel analysis/design as needed.
  • Support planning and budgeting processes by providing complete and accurate estimates of material, labor, and total costs associated with civil portions of transmission substations and line projects.
  • Coordinate and communicate with other departments associated with Civil Design.
  • Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and Southern Company committee members to resolve standards and material issues.
  • Provide support to Construction Services, Substation Construction, Transmission Line Construction, Field Services, Project Management, and Substation Maintenance.
  • Perform site visits for projects, including pre-construction meetings, during construction and post-construction, with some overnight travel required.
  • Participate in design review meetings.
  • Provide work direction and oversight for designers and drafters.
  • Support Southern Company's design criteria and standardization effort.
  • Handle multiple tasks simultaneously, set priorities, and use effective time management and organizational skills to achieve project team goals.
  • Provide assistance as part of a storm restoration team after major storm events in the Southern Company service territory.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering is required for Structural Engineer; BS in Civil Engineering strongly preferred.
  • Engineer-In-Training (EIT) Certification required for Structural Engineer.
  • AutoCAD training, experience or certification is required for Structural Designer; a two-year degree from a technical school or university is preferred.
  • Experience in industrial and/or commercial structural engineering is strongly preferred for Structural Engineer.
  • Experience in structural steel and concrete design is strongly preferred for Structural Engineer.
  • 10 plus years structural steel detailing experience including commercial, industrial, stairs, handrails, etc. for Structural Designer.
  • Experience in creating substation drawings is a plus for Structural Designer.
  • Experience as a contractor or consultant to Georgia Power, Alabama Power, or Southern Company is a plus for Structural Designer.
  • Experience using AutoCAD at a high level is required for Structural Designer.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with seismic, wind and vibration analysis desired for Structural Engineer.
  • Prior foundation design experience is a plus for Structural Engineer.
  • Design experience in transmission structures is a plus for both roles.
  • Experience using 3D modeling software such as SDS Design Data or Tekla or similar software for Structural Designer.
