About the position

Moffatt & Nichol is seeking a Structural or Civil Engineer with a strong background in inspection and rehabilitation (I&R) to join our Walnut Creek or Oakland, CA office. The ideal candidate will have experience in supporting inspection-related work for various infrastructure projects, including bridges, ports, terminals, piers, wharves, and marinas. This role will serve as the inspection and rehabilitation point person, coordinating activities, performing quality assurance and quality control (QAQC), and writing reports and proposals. The successful candidate will interact directly with clients and may have opportunities to bring in new work, while also performing engineering design and inspections as time permits. In this role, you will be responsible for developing plans, specifications, and cost estimates to support waterfront and bridge infrastructure development and rehabilitation work. You will help resolve design problems through field investigations, inspections, and detailed design work. Additionally, you will calculate construction quantity estimates, schedule team members for inspection activities, and perform or review analysis and design of waterfront structures and other maritime projects. You may also supervise engineers and technicians during field activities and work closely with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects. Structural site inspections and the preparation of inspection reports will also be key components of your responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Develop plans, specifications, and cost estimates to support waterfront and bridge infrastructure development and rehabilitation work.
  • Help resolve design problems through field investigations, inspections, and detailed design work.
  • Calculate construction quantity estimates.
  • Schedule work of team members for inspection-related activities.
  • Perform or review analysis, design, and inspection of waterfront structures and other maritime projects.
  • Develop plans, specifications, and calculations as needed.
  • Supervise engineers and technicians during field activities as required.
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, scientists, and project managers on multi-discipline projects.
  • Perform structural site inspections and prepare inspection reports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (with structural focus) or related discipline from an accredited university; Master's degree preferred.
  • Professional Engineer licensure in California or ability to obtain via reciprocity within 6 months of hire.
  • 6 to 15 years of related experience in structural engineering or inspection and rehabilitation.
  • NHI-130055 bridge inspection certification.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and presentation) with strong technical writing capabilities.
  • Valid driver's license in good standing.
  • Ability and willingness to travel as required, primarily within the state of employment.
  • Possession of or eligibility to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC).
  • Selected candidate must consent to and pass a post-offer/pre-employment drug screening.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certified Commercial Diver (ADCI, HSE, DCBC, IMCA, or ADAS) preferred but not required.
  • Experienced/licensed boat operator is a plus.
