About the position

Kiewit Power Engineering is seeking a Structural Engineer Intern to assist in establishing, maintaining, and improving company standards and tools while contributing to project success. The intern will work under close supervision, gaining familiarity with design standards and engineering codes, and will be involved in preparing engineering calculations, design sketches, and cost estimates. This role offers an opportunity for growth in technical and professional skills within a supportive team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop familiarity with departmental design standards and applicable engineering codes.
  • Understand and adhere to the Kiewit Power Engineers Quality Plan requirements.
  • Prepare basic engineering calculations following standard methods and principles.
  • Prepare basic design sketches for drafting and incorporation into final plans.
  • Calculate cost and quantity estimates for projects based on collected data analysis.
  • Assist in checking various calculations, prepared drawings, and documents as assigned.
  • Inspect construction sites to monitor progress and ensure conformance to engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Check vendor's drawings for structural construction commodities.
  • Submit lessons learned to the Kiewit Power Engineers database.
  • Communicate with other disciplines to coordinate design interfacing issues.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil or Architectural Engineering (with Structural emphasis) or Structural Engineering from an ABET accredited college or university.
  • GPA above 3.0 preferred.
  • Completed a fundamental of structural analysis course including computer application.
  • Completed a strength of materials course with statics and dynamics application.
  • Completed fundamentals of steel design course and/or fundamentals of concrete design course.
  • Comfortable with basic spreadsheet, database, and word processing programs.
  • Familiar with basic structural analysis software, engineering software, and basic CADD software for reviewing drafter's work.
  • Specific knowledge of SAP2000, MathCad, and Navisworks is highly desirable.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with engineering software and CADD software.
  • Familiarity with project management tools.
