About the position

WSP is currently seeking a Structural Engineer - Qualified Parking Structure Inspector (QPSI) for our New York City, NY office. This role involves engaging in projects with our Buildings-Structures Team, contributing to a growing organization that is dedicated to meeting client objectives and solving complex challenges. The successful candidate will perform inspections and condition assessment surveys of parking garages and buildings, preparing detailed technical reports that outline findings and necessary repair details. In this position, you will be responsible for collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from various sources including physical work sites, surveys, structural plans, blueprints, schematics, technical drawings, and computer-generated reports. You will follow standard practices to provide technical assistance and guidance, ensuring that inspections, construction, and the functioning of buildings and materials adhere to design standard specifications. As a consultant, you may serve as the sole inspector on construction projects or assist in overseeing inspection activities for projects of moderate scope and complexity. Your duties will include writing comprehensive technical reports that summarize inspection findings and conclusions, utilizing photographs, sketches, calculations, and technical drawings. You will verify load calculations, manage change orders, and interpret contract plans and specifications, resolving any discrepancies. Additionally, you will monitor project phasing plans and contractors' work to ensure quality control and compliance with contracts, documenting work progress and any issues that arise. Collaboration with cross-functional teams will be essential in executing project work, and you will attend pre-construction meetings to address questions from contractors and other stakeholders. You will also assist technical staff, project managers, and contractors in identifying and assessing risks, providing input and analysis for construction and engineering challenges. Your role will involve calculating payments due to contractors for completed work, preparing work plans, and coordinating field/site work. You will analyze and interpret data obtained during inspections, contributing to action plans for environmental, construction, and operational activities. Furthermore, you will provide guidance and training to entry-level inspection staff and engage with clients and contractors to schedule and coordinate project inspections. Ethical decision-making regarding company resources and adherence to WSP's Code of Conduct will be paramount in this role. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as business needs arise.

Responsibilities

  • Perform inspections and condition assessment surveys of parking garages and buildings.
  • Prepare technical reports of findings and required repair details.

  • Work with cross-functional teams to execute project work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 5+ years of relevant post-education experience in the discipline with prior construction inspection and engineering experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in concrete, steel, and masonry inspection for buildings and design of structural repairs.
  • New York State Professional Engineer (PE) License.
  • Current Qualified Parking Structure Inspector (QPSI) certification by New York City DOB.
  • Current OSHA-10 Hr safety certification.
  • Valid state driver's license.
  • Advanced knowledge of construction inspection principles and field inspection practices.
  • Advanced knowledge of relevant construction codes, regulations, and compliance practices.
  • Analytical mindset with sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective interaction with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail and ability to multi-task in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to learn new techniques and comply with company policies.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
