About the position

Moffatt & Nichol's Walnut Creek or Oakland, CA office is actively seeking a Structural Engineer with a focus on waterfront and marine projects. The ideal candidate will have 4 to 6 years of experience in planning and design for waterfront structures, including marinas, ports, terminals, vessel mooring and berthing structures, bulkheads, breakwater, and shore protection structures. The role requires a strong background in structural analysis and modeling, as well as earthquake engineering. The professional staff includes engineers, planners, and scientists who collaborate on various projects across multiple disciplines. The Structural Engineer will be responsible for performing analysis, design, and inspection of waterfront structures, asset management, and other maritime projects. This includes working with various materials such as timber, steel, concrete, and composites, as well as developing plans, specifications, and inspection reports. The role also involves resolving design problems, calculating construction quantity estimates, and conducting construction site inspections. The position is primarily office-based, with some site visits required, which may involve navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment. Some travel may also be necessary to collaborate with other offices or project sites.

Responsibilities

  • Perform analysis, design, and inspection of waterfront structures, asset management, and other maritime projects.
  • Conduct structural analysis and design with timber, steel, concrete, and composite materials.
  • Perform prestressed concrete analysis and design.
  • Develop plans, specifications, and inspection reports as needed.
  • Help resolve design problems through field investigations or inspections and detailed design work.
  • Calculate construction quantity estimates.
  • Collaborate closely with architects, engineers, scientists, and project managers on multi-discipline projects.
  • Manage office construction administration, including review of shop drawings and technical submittals.
  • Conduct construction site inspections and prepare inspection reports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a Structural focus; a Master's degree in Structural Engineering is preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • 4 to 6 years of structural design experience in waterfront/marine structural or bridge design, preferably in seismically active regions on the West Coast of the US.
  • Experience with structural modeling using nonlinear elements and/or soil-structure interaction is preferred.
  • Proficiency in SAP2000 is required; experience with AutoCAD, STAAD, LPile, and MicroStation is preferred.
