About the position

Karen Clark & Company (KCC) is seeking structural engineering professionals to join our dynamic team of catastrophe model developers. In this role, you will collaborate closely with scientists and fellow engineers to enhance our global suite of advanced catastrophe models. Your work will be pivotal in developing and maintaining building vulnerability models that address various perils, including earthquakes, hurricanes, wildfires, and floods. This position not only requires technical expertise but also a commitment to innovation and excellence in the field of catastrophe modeling. As a Structural Engineer at KCC, you will be responsible for collecting, compiling, and analyzing catastrophe loss data to inform model development. You will perform validation tests on model loss estimates to ensure accuracy and reliability. Additionally, you will prepare technical documents and presentations that communicate complex scientific models effectively to diverse audiences. Your role will also involve participating in KCC's Live Event response, which includes creating event footprints, estimating insured losses, and conducting post-event damage surveys for natural disasters worldwide. Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain building vulnerability models for different perils such as earthquakes, hurricanes, wildfires, floods, etc.
  • Collect, compile, and analyze catastrophe loss data
  • Perform validation tests on model loss estimates
  • Prepare technical documents and presentations related to scientific models
  • Perform tasks related to KCC's Live Event response, which includes creating event footprints, estimating insured losses, and conducting post-event damage surveys for natural disasters around the world

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Structural or Civil Engineering required, PhD a plus
  • Knowledge of hazard intensity measures (e.g., ground motion spectral acceleration, gust and sustained wind speeds, flood inundation depth, etc.)
  • Knowledge of building response to and damage from natural hazards
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Keen orientation to detail and an eye for professional presentation
  • Recognized organizational abilities
  • Knowledge and experience in statistics and probability is a plus
  • Ability to travel within the US or internationally with little advance notice
  • Experience in catastrophe modeling a plus
  • Knowledge of C# programming language a plus

  • Experience with QGIS or ArcGIS software is a plus
