About the position

The Structural Engineering Discipline Lead at AECOM will oversee and guide the structural design for flood risk management projects, ensuring compliance with standards and regulations while fostering innovation and collaboration within a diverse team. This role involves leading the preparation of structural analyses, plans, and specifications, mentoring junior engineers, and engaging with clients and stakeholders to deliver high-quality solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Conceptualize the structural design and oversee preparation of structural analyses, plans, specifications, cost estimates, technical reports, and other project documents.
  • Collaborate with clients and AECOM counterparts to ensure stakeholder buy-in to solutions.
  • Oversee and review work produced by others, ensuring quality control measures are followed.
  • Seek opportunities to innovate and trial new methods in structural design.
  • Delegate tasks, direct and oversee the work of others, and act as a technical mentor.
  • Ensure compliance of design with all applicable standards and regulations, providing the seal and signature of the professional engineer.
  • Participate in alternatives analyses and value engineering.
  • Perform constructability reviews and conduct site visits at active construction sites.
  • Present to clients for projects and proposals as needed.
  • Provide expertise on number of hours and assumptions for cost proposals, and determine staffing requirements for the defined scope and schedule.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related engineering field + 8 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
  • Professional Engineer license in one state in the US and able to easily obtain licenses in other states via reciprocity.
  • Experience working on federal projects for agencies like USACE, USIBWC, FEMA, NRCS, etc.
  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • Masters in Structural Engineering is preferred.
  • Expertise in structural design and construction requirements for flood risk management projects.
  • Working knowledge of federal flood control design guidelines, like USACE Engineering Manuals and FEMA's 44 CFR Section 65.
  • At least 15 years of experience as a Structural Engineer, with the last 10 years focused on design of flood risk management projects.
  • Leadership in at least one lock and dam system design project in the last 10 years.
  • A working knowledge of Bentley OpenRoads and AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Excellent understanding of software such as SAP2000, Excel, CPGA, and GROUP management.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in alternative delivery projects, not necessarily in flood risk.
