About the position

The BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) is seeking a skilled Maintenance Worker III specializing in welding to join their team. This position plays a crucial role in maintaining and repairing various structural elements within the BART system, ensuring safety and functionality for Bay Area residents. The ideal candidate will have a passion for working in a fast-paced environment and will be responsible for performing precision field welding and related tasks. Responsibilities

  • Perform precision arc, MIG, TIG, and gas welding on structural elements such as grating, doors, stairs, gates, and platforms.
  • Read diagrams and prints, discussing work to be performed with the supervisor or foreworker.
  • Determine necessary approach, tools, and equipment for welding tasks.
  • Operate a high-rail vehicle to reach job locations.
  • Prepare surfaces for welding by cutting, chipping, shaping, and sanding.
  • Use measuring devices to determine measurements accurately.
  • Fabricate appropriate parts for repairs as needed.
  • Adjust and use welding, brazing, and soldering equipment effectively.
  • Grind, smooth, and finish welding surfaces to ensure quality.
  • Perform shop work to fabricate repair parts for field placement.
  • Complete records of work performed and materials used, reporting maintenance needs to the foreworker.

Requirements

  • Completion of an apprenticeship in welding.
  • One year of experience in combination welding, with heavy rail welding and repair experience being desirable.
  • Valid California Class A driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain District certification for operating high-rail vehicles.
  • Physical ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and sufficient mobility to perform work tasks.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with heavy rail welding and repair.
  • Knowledge of safety practices related to welding work.
