About the position
The Athletic Grounds Student Assistant position at The University of Alabama involves supporting the maintenance and operations of athletic fields for football, baseball, and softball. This role is designed for current students of the university, providing them with an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in grounds maintenance while contributing to the preparation and upkeep of sports facilities. The assistant will be involved in various tasks including pregame setup, game day operations, and post-game breakdown, ensuring that the fields are in optimal condition for athletic events. In this role, the student assistant will work closely with full-time staff and the Director of Sports Fields, assisting with daily operations and specific tasks assigned to them. Responsibilities include restocking supplies, performing light cleaning and organizational tasks, fueling turf equipment, and maintaining cleanliness of the equipment. The assistant will also engage in general groundskeeping duties such as mowing, trimming, edging, and blowing leaves, contributing to the overall aesthetic and functionality of the athletic grounds. Specific duties vary by sport. For football, the assistant will help with painting the field, setting up and breaking down game equipment, and cleaning up after games. For baseball and softball, responsibilities include preparing the field before games, maintaining the infield, and ensuring bullpens are ready for use. This position requires a commitment of at least 10 hours per week, with the flexibility to work nights and weekends during the sports season.
Responsibilities
- Assist with pregame setup, game day operations, and post-game breakdown for football, baseball, and softball.
- Support full-time staff with day-to-day operations of the grounds maintenance crew.
- Assist the Director of Sports Fields with regularly assigned tasks.
- Help respective field manager as needed during scheduled shifts.
- Restock refrigerators in Grounds Shops with drinks.
- Perform light cleaning and organizational tasks around the Grounds Shop.
- Fill up turf equipment with fuel and clean equipment as needed.
- Engage in general groundskeeping duties such as walk mowing, string trimming, edging, and blowing leaves.
- For football, assist with painting by holding/moving paint shields, filling up painters, and cleaning up paint machines.
- Set up and break down the field including sideline rugs, trash cans, and game equipment.
- Pick up trash and debris post football games and practices, and reset the facility.
- For baseball/softball, assist in game day preparation including sweeping edges, raking dirt, and covering/uncovering bullpens.
- Drag infield dirt with a stiff prior to and during games, and prepare and repair bullpens before and after games.
Requirements
- Current University of Alabama student.
- Ability to work a minimum of 10 hours per week.
- Ability to work night and weekend hours once sports begin.
- Excellent communication skills.
