About the position

The Student Assistant in Manufacturing Engineering will serve as a Research Assistant starting in Fall 2024, focusing on the study of extrusion-based additive manufacturing (3D printing) processes for high-performance materials. This role involves developing and optimizing 3D printing processes, characterizing material properties, and designing lightweight parts, all while contributing to the academic environment at Georgia Southern University.

Responsibilities

  • Develops process themes for 3D printing filament of high-performance materials to improve printing efficiency
  • Characterizes material properties of 3D printed parts according to related ASTM standards
  • Analyzes part accuracy of benchmark parts using inspection and metrology equipment
  • Designs lightweight parts using advanced solid modeling software and simulates part loading scenarios for improved applications
  • Performs 3D printing of parts using optimized printing recipes and explores the potential of 3D printing as a manufacturing method to substitute for conventional processes of high-performance materials
  • Attends research group meetings and reports on study progress

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in six or more undergraduate credit hours or three or more graduate credit hours at Georgia Southern University.
